Joint Pain

JOINT PAIN

The first step to dealing with any type of joint pain is to consult your doctor so he or she can discuss your treatment options. Except in severe cases, joint pain can be treated using physical therapy techniques and methods.

At Performance Physical Therapy & Wellness, we deal with all types of joint pain. Here’s a look at some of the specific joint problems and the treatments we perform so you can go back to enjoying life while doing the things you love.

Knee Pain

Knee pain can be due to several causes including an injury to the meniscus, which is the soft and fibrous tissue found between the femur and the tibia.  To manage pain and swelling due to a torn or injured meniscus, you will be working with our physical therapists whose goal is to help your knee recover and restore its mobility and strength.  Osteoarthritis is another cause of knee pain. Otherwise known as degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It occurs when cartilage between the joints wears away causing the bones to rub against each other.  This results in pain, stiffness, swelling, and limitation of movement.  If you are suffering from osteoarthritis, our therapists will not only teach you ways to increase flexibility and strengthen the muscles around your joint, we will also help you manage and decrease the pain.

Shoulder Pain

One of the most common causes of shoulder pain, an injury to the rotator cuff can be a consequence of a one-time occurrence such an accident or long-term overuse of the muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder. The good news is, half of the people affected by rotator cuff injuries can recover with proper exercise and at-home care.  We offer interventions to help improve your range of motion, reduce pain, and restore your rotator cuff to its full use, if possible.

Hip Pain

Hip pain can be caused by damage or wearing down of the cartilage that allows the hip bone to move inside its socket without friction. It can also be due to the overuse of the muscles and tendons or a fracture to the hip bone itself, which can be caused by an injury, such as a fall. If your hip pain is caused by arthritis or an inflammation of the joints, we provide physical therapy treatment to increase your range of motion.  We will also instruct you on how to do non-impact exercises to manage the pain and improve your condition overall.

Foot & Ankle Pain

Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and ankle sprains are some of the common causes of foot, ankle, and heel pain which people who lead an active lifestyle generally experience.  We do not just treat whatever is causing you pain, we will also help you identify the root cause of the problem to find the best treatment course possible.  For instance, an ankle sprain can be caused by weakness in the hip or lower back.  Thus, our treatment plan for you will include manual therapy exercises and techniques to strengthen those areas.

Tennis Elbow

As the name suggests, tennis elbow is caused by repetitive stress on the elbow joint, which is often the case in people who play tennis and other racquet sports. However, any activity that involves repetitive twisting of the wrist, such as golfing, swimming, and regular use of a hammer or screwdriver can all cause tennis elbow. At Performance PTW, we recommend rest as the first step in treating this condition. We also make instruct in various arm exercises to strengthen and stretch the muscles of the arm.  Hands-on techniques to improve movement of the joint can be used with amazing effectiveness.

Hand & Wrist Pain

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that often causes both hand and wrist pain. It occurs when the median nerve, which is located on the palm, is inflamed due to various conditions such as fluid retention during pregnancy or menopause, diabetes, high blood pressure, and rheumatoid arthritis. Most frequently diagnosed in people aged 30 to 60, carpal tunnel syndrome is three times more likely to affect women than men. If you suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, surgery is not your first and only option. We offer manual therapy to reduce pain and improve the function of your hand and wrist.

Sacroiliac (SI) Pain

The sacroiliac (SI) joint, which is found in your lower back on each side of your spine is responsible for carrying the weight of your upper body when you walk or stand.  SI pain is triggered when the joint becomes inflamed due to injury or any activity that causes a repeated pounding to the area, such as jogging.  If pain in this area has made it difficult for you to do the things you normally do, physical therapy can help restore strength and flexibility to the SI joint.  Our treatment plan also includes correcting any limping, leaning to one side as you stand or walk, or any other habits that you may have acquired in order to avoid the pain.

Rib Pain

A sedentary lifestyle, prolonged sitting in front of the computer, and injury can all cause rib pain. If you are suffering from rib pain, we provide hands-on treatment that will loosen the joints and muscles of the rib and mid-back.  We will also educate you on proper posture as well as movement to decrease pain and to restore strength and mobility.

Cranial & Facial Pain

We know that cranial and neck pain can affect your everyday life. At Performance Physical Therapy & Wellness, we offer solutions to various conditions like tension headaches and TMJ dysfunction which can contribute to neck pain.  Our therapists will do a complete assessment to identify all the possible impairments that may be making your symptoms worse.  We will then offer treatment that includes spinal manipulation, postural education, and repositioning maneuvers.
